  • The lesser bilby (Macrotis leucura) was last reported alive in north-eastern South Australia in 1931 and is now presumed extinct.
  • Its habitat was sandhills, where free surface water was rarely available. Like the greater bilby, the lesser bilby also dug burrows, closing the entrance to its burrow when inside to protect against predators.
  • This lesser bilby had white fur along the top of its tail and was smaller and less colourful than the greater bilby.
  • It was also an omnivore and feed on ants, termites, beetles, larvae, fruits and fungi. Females reared up to two young at a time.
  • It is assumed that the decline and extinction of the lesser bilby was due to habitat loss and the introduction of rabbits and foxes.
