Black Flying Fox (P.alecto)

Description - Black head and body with red-brown fur on the back of the neck and shoulders. Brownish hair is not uncommon around the eyes and on the face. No fur on lower legs. Head-body length 24-26cm.

Habitat - Coastal forests, mangroves, swamps and rainforest.

Distribution - Coastal northern Australia (see map below)

Breeding Season - Oct-Dec

Status - Lower risk

Grey-headed Flying Fox (P.poliocephalus)

Description - Grey head and body with a collar of orange fur around neck. The belly fur is grey, often with flecks of whit or ginger. The only species which has fur right down the legs to the toes. Head-body length 23-29cm.

Habitat -Eucalyptus forest, swamps and rainforest.

Distribution - Coastal Victoria to Maryborough, QLD (see map below)

Breeding Season - Oct-Dec

Status - Threatened (vulnerable)

Little Red Flying Fox (P.scapulatus)

Description - Fur varies from a reddish brown to light brown. Patches of light creamy, brown fur where the wing and the shoulder meet. Greyish fur on head. Semi-transparent brown wings. Head-body length 19-24cm.

Habitat -All forest types..

Distribution - Widespread but not in arid interior (see map below)

Breeding Season - April - June

Status - Lower risk

Spectacled Flying Fox (P.conspicillatus)

Description - Black with pale yellow rings around eyes and back of head and shoulders. Head-body length 22-24cm.

Habitat - Rainforest and coastal swamps.

Distribution - Coastal and rainforest of far northern Queensland (see map below)

Breeding Season - October - December

Status - Threatened (vulnerable)
