QCC Plans Offshore Wind Farm For Tugun Desalination

Monday, 17 March 2008

Queensland Conservation (QCC) has sought first stage funding from the Queensland Government to construct an offshore wind farm for the Tugun Desalination plant on the Gold Coast

‘The Tugun plant will emit over 200,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas each year, due to its high energy use,’ said Toby Hutcheon, Coordinator of QCC

‘With yesterdays announcement that the Tugun plant will be carbon neutral, the obvious strategy now is to invest in renewable energy to directly power the facility,’ said Hutcheon

‘QCC is stepping up to the plate to make this happen, all we need is State Government support,’ said Hutcheon

QCC has sought $4 million from the QLD Renewable Energy Fund for a feasibility study-the first stage of a construction program.

‘We are currently seeking a suitable project management firm with expertise in off-shore wind development, to partner with us on the project,’ said Hutcheon

QCC encourages other renewable energy proponents to follow its lead and submit proposals for this and similar projects to the QLD Renewable Energy Fund.
