Queensland Conservation (QCC) today congratulated the State Government on committing to making the Tugun Desalination Plant carbon neutral. Queensland Conservation (QCC) today congratulated the State Government on committing to making the Tugun Desalination Plant carbon neutral. ‘To meet greenhouse reduction targets it is essential that all new development is carbon neutral. The State Government has taken a great step in the right direction with this announcement,’ said Toby Hutcheon, Executive Director of QCC ‘The Tugun plant would have otherwise emitted over 200,000 tonnes of CO2 every year,’ said Hutcheon ‘That is equivalent to the emissions from 50,000 cars,’ said Hutcheon ‘It was imperative that the plant be carbon neutral either through using renewable energy or offsetting those emissions,’ said Hutcheon This decision brings Tugun in line with the Kwinana Desalination Plant in Perth which is carbon neutral and provides water at $1.20KL. SEQ consumers currently pay a minimum charge of 1.19 KL. |
