Queensland
Conservation today welcomed the decision to end the practice of shooting flying
foxes in orchards.
The Hon Andrew McNamara, Minister for Sustainability, Climate Change and Innovation, made a statement in parliament today announcing the decision to stop issuing ‘damage mitigation permits' that allow orchardists to shoot flying foxes. "This is a long-overdue recognition of the cruelty of shooting flying foxes in order to protect crops," said campaigner Dr Carol Booth. "It is also a good decision from a broader ecological standpoint," she continued. "Flying foxes are very important pollinators and seed dispersers of native rainforest trees and other valuable native plant species." "Queensland's environment needs more flying foxes working to help maintain our native forests, particularly in the face of Climate Change," concluded Dr Booth.
